Watch How Dr. Gurian explains his process!
Dr. Gurian is not a speech therapist. He's a former Cosmetic Dentist and Clinical Prof. in Oral Medicine and Oro-Facial Pain, plus a 20 year Board member of The Assoc. for Spirituality and Psychotherapy who works with people all over the world to teach the cognitive behavioral therapy and related techniques he used to cure himself of a severe stutter.
He started stuttering at age 6 or 7 and when traditional speech therapy didn't help him, he was determined to help himself and find a cure.
He suffered with stuttering throughout his 20's and well beyond.
And now as one of the only doctors with a long-standing career in comedy, a best selling author, radio personality and a motivational speaker, you can see him online as well as in the video above, to hear how he speaks.
You can also see him in his many performances on TV, on radio and on stage where he does interviews and performs comedy, and often addresses his battle with stuttering, and how he finally completely overcame it.

Dr. Gurian advises potential patients to read about his techniques first on the web to see if it makes sense to them.
This is a cognitive behavioral therapeutic approach, which means it's about thinking and learning how to change your thoughts, the very same thoughts that make you think you "need" to stutter and that there's something wrong with you, which isn't true.
It's critically important to him and to the success of the techniques that each thing, and the reasoning behind it makes sense to you.
He suggests that if you are interested in finding out more, you first send a detailed e-mail to him at firstname.lastname@example.org with information about yourself, including your age, where you are based, how long you've been stuttering, what type of work you do, ... especially if speaking or phone calls are involved, ... and what if anything you have tried in terms of treatment, and why you think it didn't work for you.
No one in health care can or should ever promise any particular results, and the same holds true for the treatment of stuttering. However on the link posted above and here again you can read some of the testimonials from people who have been helped.
It's not easy to stop Stuttering especially if you've been doing it a long time and have been convinced that there's something wrong with you, which unfortunately is the way most stutterers feel.
The process involves convincing your subconscious mind, which is what created the "need" for you to stutter in the first place, that you no longer have any "need" to continue stuttering, and that process takes a different amount of time for each person.
It took Dr. Gurian years of self-treatment until he was ready to release himself from what he calls "the bondage of stuttering." But he had no one to help him. He had to do it all on his own, which makes it much harder and why he considers it "Grace" that he was able to figure it out.
He describes himself as being "obsessed" with stopping stuttering and that there was no other outcome he would accept.
He worked tirelessly day and night to create exercises, thoughts, and affirmations that would free him from his stutter.
Only another stutterer knows the pain and the humiliation that stutterers endure on a daily basis.
If you are willing to work hard on a daily basis, which should be easy to commit to if you are really tired of stuttering, and if you truly believe that you can stop stuttering, which is also critically important, then you can expect to improve and achieve a level of fluency commensurate with your efforts.
He was amazed at how well he did on his very first session. He said he hadn't been this fluent in YEARS!
Most stutterers have a hard time saying their own names, and introducing themselves. My feeling is that because your name is your identity, if you're not happy with who you are, it's not easy to present yourself. Joe D. is a psychologist who worked with Dr. Gurian for about a year and a half and in this session announced that he can finally say his name easily, with no stress at all. A MAJOR breakthrough for him!
This brave patient had the courage to record this video on his own, strictly as an exercise, as a way of showing his progress, and as a way of confronting his fear of speaking. The minor hesitations he shows are a 1,000 % improvement of the way he spoke before, or when he becomes overwhelmed.
What's particularly interesting is how well he speaks when he memorized something which is very common for stutterers. When there is no doubt what word to say next it's very often easier to be fluent.
I received this amazing recording from a man I work with who stutters. He took the information I gave him and created a very powerful list of audio affirmations and you can hear how wonderful his voice sounds when he's speaking fluently.
Please fill in your e-mail contact for periodic postings with helpful information about the techniques he uses, the reasoning behind them, and the progress that people are making if they would like that to be known. He would also set up group workshops for people who live in the NYC area.
